WEEKLY REPORT - QF GD2

18.04.2022
Dear Colleagues,

Another exciting week has passed with three decisive games finishing with a one-shot opportunity difference. Three of our QF series have finished, 2:0. The last game has seen a bigger difference, but the tough, intense battle continued until the end of the game, now the only question is - who will book the last spot of the F-4 in Bilbao.

This exciting round was also the result of your contribution. No one can point a finger of blame at our Crews. From my point of view, we did the expected standard of officiating in all games but as always, each game has different areas for improvement.

Areas for Improvement from our Video Observers

1. Fake being fouled situations
2. Better selection of contact situations - easy, marginal, and guess calls
3. Illegal screen vs. defensive bump to the screener
4. The adjustments inside a position to have/keep an open angle

UF Criteria

Four games, two UF decisions, both correct

IRS usage

Four games, 8x IRS usage, and all the final decisions were correct. Four initial decisions were changed.

From my side, I would like to share some opinions and thoughts regarding many situations in the Fake being fouled area.
We all witness, that in modern sports people are complaining a lot against ugly situations. A few days ago, this happened in the football game Atletico vs. Manchester City.

We also see similar reports from tennis, people complain about the constant disrespectful behavior from several players.

Q - What is making an ugly picture of our sport? Primarily, simulation of a foul, fake being fouled. Players, more and more fall, stumble and overemphasize contacts. They make gestures to stage they have been fouled. Also, after their own illegal contact they often simulate that their opponent fouled them. We have started to get situations where players with the ball, after passing their opponent, hit those opponents with an elbow, an arm, or a palm and these, from the Referees' side, often go unnoticed and unpunished and I don't understand why. We have our POE, we have articles in FIBA Rules, and we have protocols in place to deal with these non-basketball actions. We still have an opportunity to clean the game, an opportunity we must all grasp together otherwise, the audience will stop coming to watch a fair, and beautiful game of basketball.

I'd like to finish by congratulating our BCL Referees on their very good performances in the F4 ECW, F4 ELW and during the FEC semi-final games. I hope and wish that we'll continue to offer great officiating performances in both final FEC games. For the Crew of the third BCL QF game, I wish that they will be the best team on the court.
