WEEKLY REPORT: Play-Ins GD3

23.01.2023

Dear Referees,

Behind us is an exciting number of Play-In games. We've officiated 20 games, with the final assessments below:

ASSESSMENTS PLAY - INS, BCL 2022/ 2023

We can see the overall assessment is between Standard and Above Standard assessment. Also, we can see that the level of assessment increased towards to end of the phase. We can be satisfied with your performances, no games assessed as below or not-acceptable standard, and with better performances at the end of the phase. In P-I GD 3, we can see the direction we can all attain, and should strive to attain between now and the end of the Season. Above standard in most of the games, with very good assessments.

As was in EuroBasket 2022, we made errors in our performances that soured the overall feeling of success and achievement. The situation below could be avoided had we remained highly focused with an active mindset and game understanding. Our mistake was again painful, and we gave a reason for a team to protest. You are highly experienced Referees, you are our FIBA Elite group, and yet, as facilitators of our great sport, one mistake can create big damage to our reputation.

Feedback from the Video Observers:

UF SITUATIONS

We increased our focus, and with the support of modern technology (4x), we made 5 UF decisions, and all were correct.

ISR USAGE - HCC

Of 8 coaches, 3 of them asked for HCC.

In one situation, the request helped our Referees. In two situations, the last touch out of bounds, our Referees' final decision, by the Video Observer, was not correct. Again, my advice is not to rush during the IRS review. Especially, when we have a decisive game, and a decisive moment of the game.

TO IMPROVE

From any game, we can learn a lot. This round, from the 4 games, we received 2 main points for further improvement:

1. Reduce the number of double-whistle decisions.

I can understand your intention to have strong play coverage in those important games.

Sometimes it's good to have two calls; we can explain our decisions easier with 2 same decisions, but some double whistle situations are in obvious play situations

2. Be calm during reporting, with no emotional body language, or emotional signaling.

Dear Referees.

In front of us, we have a very intense 5 weeks in several Competitions:

We should expect the expected, great games, great players, and full arenas. Also, we can expect high pressure, very emotional players, and coaches. You, as our Elite Referees, will have a great privilege to be part of these 5 exciting basketball weeks in Europe.

I am sure that you understand the importance of your full concentration, and your best possible officiating in every game, every quarter, every minute, every second, every play situation. In these 5 weeks we can show our positive effort, our great teamwork and trust and give all of the teams our highest quality performances.

With my trust, I wish you great performances in all upcoming Competitions until the end of February.
