Clinic for BCL referees

09.09.2020

Last weekend, the BCL Preseason Clinic for Referees was held. This year, due to the special circumstances we are living in, the clinic was celebrated online. During two days, Friday and Saturday, the 70 referees that will take part in BCL 2020-2021 season games attended several lectures and online workshops to be ready for the start of the new season.

The opening saw BCL CEO Mr Patrick Comninos addressing the officials and informing them of the current status of the competition. Then, Mr Dejan Lekic, BCL Competition Manager and Mr Joshua Landicho, BCL Competition Senior Associate, explained the protocol for the news season and wished a successful clinic to all the officials.

Directly after the opening, the referees were divided in 6 groups to attend the 6 workshops led by the BCL Referee Instructors, covering topics such as AOS, Fake, Unsportsmanlike Foul, Marginal Calls, Block/Charge or 3PO & IOT.

The next lecture was conducted by Mr Diccon Lloyd-Smeath, who talked about scouting and modern basketball tactics. After him, IHF and EHF referee Mr Boris Milosevic gave a lecture with the title 'Stay on the top', which covered topics such as team work, pressure, preparation and professionalism. This marked the end of the first day of the clinic.

Saturday started with a lecture by Chema Buceta, Sports Psychologist, who dealt with communication under pressure and control of behaviour. After him, the workshops by the Referee Instructors were completed before the break for lunch.

In the afternoon, Mr Mike Thompson explained the OBR changes valid as of October 1 to all the referees. To finish, Mr JD Collins, NCAA National Coordinator of Officials, talked about communication with coaches, controlling incorrect behaviour and feeling comfortable in the environment.

After this lecture, Mr Davorin Nakic, BCL Head of Refereeing, closed the clinic wishing all the referees a good season ahead.
